Travel funding

On-site accommodation

The registration fee includes all meals both for those staying on-site and off-site. Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre has a cafeteria containing additional meeting space. The cafeteria seats 150 people, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. Lunch and dinner meals include all-you-can-eat salad bar and dessert. Sunday brunch is offered in the summer months. Special diets and food allergies are accommodated with advance notice. Please let us know if you have special dietary needs when you register.

For those of you that are interested in staying on-site, Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre provides on-campus housing for researchers, university students and visiting groups. All residences are within convenient walking distance of labs, lecture halls and the cafeteria.

Accommodation will be on a shared occupancy basis. Please note that there are a limited number of single and double rooms. Most rooms are triples and quadruples. The choice of rooms will be assigned on a first come first serve basis and fees are different depending on room occupancy (see registration fees). When you register you might suggest with whom you would like to share and we will try to accommodate your request.

For ISBW8, Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre will make available two on-site accommodation facilities:

The new Buchanan Lodge, accommodates up to 98 people including those with disabilities. Rooms are comfortably furnished with bunkbeds, desks and washstands and are wired for high speed internet. All floors have shared shower and washroom facilities and a coin-operated laundry is located on the ground floor.

The older Dormitory provides bunk-house style accommodation for 32 people. Each room is equipped with two bunkbeds with a shared washroom/shower facility for every two rooms. Common areas are furnished with sofas, desks and chairs. Coin-operated laundries are located next door in the Buchanan Lodge and in the cafeteria complex.

Housekeeping service is provided on an as-needed basis. Fresh linens are issued for a fee upon request. Pets are not permitted on campus.

For more information, you may visit the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre website.

Off-site accommodation

For those preferring to stay off-site or who will travel with partners and/or children, there are a variety of options available including several campsites, a motel, bed & breakfasts, cabins, and lodges. Some of these may be viewed on the Bamfield website. BMSC supplied a list to the travel agent, Ms. Jenny Karmali, who has offered to assist with reservations and travel planning for participants (See contact information below).

Many options are located across a narrow channel within a two minute boat ride from BMSC. We will arrange a shuttle service for those staying across the Bamfield Inlet that will operate morning and evening. Water taxis will be available at other times.

All of the off-site options are more expensive, with the exception of camping. The Pachena Bay Campground, located at the head of the famous West Coast Trail has heated washrooms with hot showers. It should be noted that you will need a car to get to BMSC (10 minute drive) and reservations are necessary as the trail is very popular.
